A SCARBOROUGH woman who damaged her teeth during an epileptic fit made more than 25 calls in vain to try to get an emergency appointment.
Tracey Vasey, 43, called the NHS Direct helpline, which advised her to contact Northway Dental Clinic. But after trying to get through for an hour she was transferred to Scarborough Hospital's switchboard – and told to call NHS Direct.

Mrs Vasey, of Filey Road, said: "When I called NHS Direct back the nurse was so concerned she advised me to go to A&E.

"I was in agony and had not been sleeping, which was making my epilepsy worse.

"I was given antibiotics and told to go to Malton Hospital the next day. They said my tooth did need to come out, but they wouldn't be able to do it for six weeks.

"I do think the situation in Scarborough is pretty bad. What are people supposed to do in an emergency if no-one answers the phone?"

Mrs Vasey has around three major epileptic fits a month and has a Vagus nerve stimulator implanted below her collarbone to help reduce the frequency and intensity of seizures.

The mother-of-two, who chairs the Scarborough's Epilepsy Action group, ended up asking her daughter's dentist for help, as she has not been able to register with an NHS dentist in Scarborough.

She eventually received help from Scarborough dentist and a former chairman of the British Dental Association John Renshaw.

She said: "I spoke to Mr Renshaw at 10.15am and was in the dentist's chair at 10.45am. I had to pay as a private patient but I was so relieved to be seen. "

Mr Renshaw said: "Mrs Vasey's situation was pretty grim and she needed attention. NHS services seem to be going downhill which is illogical when you consider that it's the 60th anniversary. But this is 2008, not 1948 and people should be able to access an emergency service when they need it."

A spokesman for North Yorkshire and York PCT said: "We do recognise that sometimes it can be difficult to get through. "There is an answer phone facility – if people leave a contact phone number someone will call them back."

If proof were ever needed this is it.

We need a 'Super Dental Surgery' in the town not a 'Medical' one. This is what the campaign should be for.

A million signatures were handed in at Downing Street yesterday opposing the 'Super Surgery's'. I doubt any one is disatisfied with their doctor locally but many would welcome a Dental Surgery.

The Save Save our GPs surgeries campaign group are having their next public meeting at 10am on Sat 16.06.08. at the Emmanuel St Johns Church, St Johns Rd Scarborough.

The PCT will be at the meeting, I can assure everyone that the matter regarding the deplorable state of the towns NHS dentistry service will be raised.

I will be asking the PCT for a very urgent public meeting to resolve the situation, it cannot possibly be allowed to continue.

For anyone who already has a disability to have to wait in agony before paying for private dental treatment, is deplorable.

On reading Tracey Vasey's story anyone can see she suffers enough. I would think being left in agony for so long would bring on more fit's.

I totally agree with Amaroo let's spend any money that is available on a "Super Dental Surgery". It would be a great asset to the town.

At yesterdays meeting of the 'The Save Save our GPs surgeries campaign group' I promised the state of Scarboroughs deplorable NHS dental services would be raised with the PCT chairman and it was, in public!!.

The public were one hundred percent in favour of urgent action being taken by the PCT Trust Board and the chaotic state of emergency treatment being the number one priority.

The PCT replied with the usual placitudes but no one was impressed.

As chairman at the meeting I requested a very urgent public meeting with the PCT, in order to let them know the srength of feeling in the town, I have also sent an e:mail confirming the request.

We must now await the reply, however we are not prepared to wait long before we call a public meeting with or without the PCT, at least this way it will get the message from Scarborough people to them via the media.

I asked the PCT "why we as a town are having to currently put up with third world dental services, whilst other area under their control enjoy the best money can buy.

I will keep you all informed.
